Since the 1970’s, the traditional Hawaiian double-hulled voyaging canoe Hokule’a has helped spark an era of renewal for Hawai‘i’s indigenous people, and captured the imagination of many around the world.

Operated by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, the canoe was named Hokule’a (“Star of Gladness”), after the zenith star of the Hawaiian Islands (also known as Arcturus).  Now Hokule’a is circumnavigating the Pacific on a “Voyage for the Earth,” to visit other indigenous groups and ask them to share knowledge about adapting to climate change.  Bay Area Bountiful visited during their recent visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, when Captain Mark Ellis graciously provided narration for the story.
